Tour de Cure – SA Country Tour 2018 took in some of South Australia’s most picturesque regions over two days with the target set to raise over $200,000 for cancer research.
Day One began at the Glenelg with 49 riders setting off for the 90km, 1023m elevation ride to Wirrina Cove Resort. What a start it was, with perfect weather and cycling conditions setting the scene for a fantastic first day on the road.
The morning's ride was spent taking in the picturesque Fleurieru Peninsula coastline and whilst enjoying these perfect views, the rider's first stop was at the Victory Hotel for a delicious lunch.
After lunch, all riders visited Yankalilla Area School and Myponga Primary School for a special school assembly. During these school visits, riders shared Tour de Cure’s ‘Be Fit, Be Healthy, Be Happy’ cancer prevention message to students with fun and interactive games.
After a tough first day of riding, all riders, support crew and special guests relaxed, reflected on the day and enjoyed a delicious dinner at Wirrina Cove Resort.
After the dinner Geoff Coombes, Tour de Cure Co-Founder and Director, presented Professor Michael Michael from the Flinders Foundation with a $200,000 research grant. This grant will fund vital cancer research projects with the goal of finding a cure for the disease.
Minka Drew from Camp Quality was then also presented with a $10,000 support grant from Geoff Coombes, which will play a vital role in ensuring the organisation can continue to support and improve the lives of children living with cancer.
Day Two started perfectly with riders making their way through the picturesque coastal country-side for a 120km, 992m elevation ride which would be the final leg of the tour.
210km later, riders finished their Tour de Cure journey at CMV Farms, Langhorne Creek where they were welcomed by family and friends who joined in celebrating their achievements over the past two days with a hard-earned lunch thanks to A Taste of Spain.
The achievements of the team and the money raised for cancer research would not have been possible without the support of amazing sponsors including: Lexus of Adelaide, Codan, CMV Group, Commonwealth Bank, PacLease, Collins Adelaide, Toyota Finance & Insurance & CMI Hino
