To begin the evening’s formalities, Lexus of Adelaide General Manager, Wade Sander, officially welcomed our guests and thanked them for joining us for such a special evening.
Wade was then excited to welcome VRC representative, Trish Burke, and Lexus Melbourne Cup Ambassadors, Sheila Laxon and John Letts OAM to the stage for a very special Q&A.
Guests were treated to unique stories about Sheila and John’s inspiring experiences throughout their racing careers as well as their historic wins – Sheila being the first female trainer to win the Melbourne Cup and John having won the race twice.
It was amazing to learn more about their unique experiences winning the Melbourne Cup in years gone by and how the racing industry has evolved over their respective careers.

The Lexus Melbourne Cup trophy demands more than 250 hours of skilled labour, beginning up to eight months before the race. This year’s trophy features 1.69kg of 18ct yellow gold, sourced entirely from Australian mines, specifically the Newcrest Mining Cadia mine in New South Wales. Even the trophy’s base has a local touch, being fashioned from Western Australian jarrah timber.
The cup, which has been on a 150-day tour of Australia in the leadup to the race, must be handled with gloves until it is handed over to the winning owner.
